What Colour is the Ocean? was team written by a 7 year old girl and her grandfather. Gary Collins and Maggie Rose Parsons are the authors of the book and Scott A. Keating is the illustrator. The authors and illustrator are from Newfoundland. The book was the Winner of the 2010 Atlantic Book Awards Lillian Shepherd Memorial Award for Excellence in Illustration.
Based on a song Maggie Rose and her grandfather wrote, the book tells about the changes in the colour of the ocean throughout the seasons. The sheet music for the song is in the back of the book. We liked this book. It is neat to think about how the colour of the ocean does change, something I hadn't really noticed before. While it is great to have the sheet music in the back of the book, not all readers would have the musical knowledge to use it to learn the song. I think it would be wonderful if there was a web link in the book to a recording or video of the author singing the song. It would also be a great addition to Gary Collins website.
This book would be a good resource for an art lesson about noticing colours around you or a science lesson about the changes of the seasons.
We'd love to hear your thoughts on the book.
